Special Concretes: Innovative Solutions for Modern Constructions

Special concretes are advanced forms of concrete designed to meet specific durability, workability and aesthetic requirements that ordinary concrete cannot satisfy.

Why choose Special Concrete?

  • Longer lifespan: High resistance to corrosive environments (e.g. coastal projects)
  • Construction speed: Reduction of working time, especially with the use of self-compacting concrete
  • Design flexibility: Possibility of implementing demanding architectural forms

Types of Special Concretes

It is an extremely fluid concrete that flows and occupies the entire volume of the formwork (mold) without the use of vibration.

  • Where is it used: In structures with very dense reinforcement, in complex architectural designs or in places where access for vibration is impossible.
  • Advantage: It reduces noise on the construction site and working time, while ensuring excellent aesthetic results (visible concrete).

It contains dispersed fibers (steel, synthetic, glass or polypropylene) that act as secondary reinforcement.

  • Where is it used: In industrial floors, shotcrete in tunnels and prefabricated elements.
  • Advantage: Controls cracking from drying shrinkage and increases impact and tensile strength.

It is produced using lightweight aggregates (such as pumice or expanded perlite) instead of classic quarry gravel.

  • Where is it used: For floor fillings, roof slopes (terraces) and restoration of old buildings to reduce dead loads.
  • Advantage: It offers excellent thermal insulation and reduces the weight of the structure.

It is sprayed at high pressure onto a surface through a special nozzle.

  • Where is it used: In slope supports, swimming pools, building reinforcements (jackets) and tunnels.
  • Advantage: It does not require molds and offers immediate stabilization.

It has a high percentage of voids (lack of fine aggregates), allowing water to pass through it.

  • Where is it used: In parking lots, sidewalks and squares for rainwater management (bioclimatic design).

Advantage: Αποτρέπει τις πλημμύρες και εμπλουτίζει τον υδροφόρο ορίζοντα.

Solidfill (often referred to as Interfill or Flowable Fill) is a special, low-strength, self-leveling concrete, used primarily as a fill material instead of soil or aggregates.

  • Where is it used: For filling pipe trenches, creating slopes in floors and roofs, as well as for sealing underground voids without the need for compression.

Advantage: Its main advantage is that it flows and fills any void without mechanical compression (vibration), saving labor and time, while ensuring the absence of future subsidence.
